Rundown of the rules - from your Las Vegas driving school
A common question that new Nevada motorcyclists ask is what’s the story with lane splitting? To recap, in 2013, the motorcycle lane splitting bill for Nevada was introduced and overwhelmingly rejected in the state Senate. That was the last time the issue was raised in Nevada, making it illegal to drive and dart your motorcycle between lanes of traffic. It doesn’t matter whether the traffic is moving or at a standstill, our Las Vegas driving school reminds – lane splitting is always illegal.
Traffic laws for motorcycles vary between states
Lane splitting, when done safely and cautiously, is actually legal in nearby California. Whereas in Nevada, it’s not even legal to drive your motorcycle in the extra space within a traffic lane or between lanes in order to pass other cars. Just like other cars must do, motorcycles are only permitted to pass another vehicle from a separate lane. However, if you’d like to ride side-by-side with another motorcycle, you are permitted, even on the Vegas Strip – as long as you have prior agreement from the other cyclist.
Don’t think that all is weighted in favor of cars though – as we teach in our driving school, cars cannot try to squeeze in next to a motorcycle on the road either, as bikers have the right to their entire traffic lane.
Nevada fines for lane splitting
In addition to the obvious threat to your own safety, the price of lane splitting is steep! Fines for motorcyclists who don’t comply with the law can start at $190.
No curfew in Nevada
Recently, a myth was circulating that Nevada motorcyclists had to adhere to a curfew that prohibits driving between 11pm and 6am. Turns out that this mandatory curfew law is not a Nevada regulation. You can ride whenever you want!
Helmet laws
Our driving school instructors cannot stress the importance of wearing a helmet enough. According to Nevada law, riders must always wear helmets. If your motorcycle isn’t equipped with a windshield or windscreen, you also need to wear protective goggles or a shield.
When purchasing your motorcycle helmet, remember that it must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, which state that helmets must weigh at least three pounds and have a protective lining, snug chin strap, and manufacturer’s label.
Motorcycle licenses from our Las Vegas driving school
To legally drive a motorcycle, you need a valid motorcycle license. To qualify for our driving school courses for a Class M license, you must meet these requirements:
- Submit a completed Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card at a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office
- Provide Social Security Number, proof of identity and age
- Be at least 16 years old
- Pass a vision test
- Pass a general test about traffic laws, highway signs, and safe driving
- Pass a specialized skills test designed for driving a motorcycle
Also, your test to receive a motorcycle license includes a pre-trip inspection of your bike. You must demonstrate a knowledge of your motorcycle’s controls and equipment, including the ignition, brakes, starter, gear shift, clutch, choke, and throttle. Additionally, the examiner will perform a safety inspection and verify that you have a valid registration and insurance.
